Strive by California artist Nancy Eckels - abstract, contemporary, modern art, painting

I recently participated in an event for a local group called

Single Mothers Outreach. Several artists were paired with

women being honored for overcoming great odds to become

successful in their lives and careers, and each artist

created a piece of artwork to represent that woman.

Tamara, the lovely lady that I was paired with,

was pregnant at age 16, married to the father,

had additional children and was eventually

divorced, but managed to get herself educated and elevated

enough to become the CEO of her own regional bank.

This painting reflects my impressions of Tamara.

I’ve used the color red to symbolize the courage, heart,

and energy of her story…..the blue to introduce a bit of

a cool and levelheaded feel. The earthy neutrals give a

glimpse into a different side of Tamara that is grounded

and very much connected to her family. Tamara doesn’t

give the impression of someone who has battled, but of

someone who used her intelligence, humanity,

perseverance,and creativity to get where she is today.

I believe that Tamara broke barriers with her career,

but I’m guessing that there were many barriers that she just

found a way around using her mind and her intuition.

Finished this painting last night after dark. Had to immediately

varnish it, because I got up at the crack of dawn this morning

to take it to a new gallery in Del Mar. The photo is a bit

dicey....too much glare...taken through varnish,

and shot at a brief stop in a parking

lot on the way to San Diego after the sun came up! Nothing

like cutting it close with the timing.!!

By the way, I have a new gallery in Del Mar, CA. (north of

San Diego for those who are not familiar) It's Del Mar Art and Gift

and will carry only my smaller work. It's an

eclectic shop right on the main street in town.

This painting is a "refresher" painting. It

was another painting which, I decided, was

too dark. I liked the subtleties of it, but

few would ever see them unless the painting

was under the lights in a baseball stadium.

is on canvas which has been mounted on masonite.

The 12" x 12" piece is then mounted on a larger 18" x 18"

piece of masonite which has been painted light gray.

The entire piece is framed in a dark charcoal and gold

frame. It has a great 3-D look to it. The whole piece

measures 20.5 inches by 20.5 ". By the way, my sister,

who is also an artist, told me about this nifty little
presentation idea. Look her up sometime at

It's always a bit daunting to stare at three empty

big empty space. So I just started on one, got it

It was one of those evenings when I park one of

my new paintings in the family room after dinner

and stare at it....thought I liked it.....changed my

mind. So today after staring at it some more,

I played with it again and like it much more now.

The original painting is below.

I usually don't get this dark, but I guess this one
was in there somewhere trying to get out. Now
that it's done, I will move on to something with less
drama and more color.

I've been working on this painting for several days
and several transitions. I'm happy with the painting,
but not with the photo. The colors are quite subtle
and really don't show here. The bottom is combination
of gray/blue, grayed violet and raw sienna in their dark
versions. the rest of the painting is the light versions
with some white, raw titanium, raw umber, and
quinacridone gold mixed in to make variations of color
